PROLIFERATIO, 2 TON OF SALT + MIXED MEDIA, 2019

Proliferatio consists of a split bloc of 2 tons of salt and a cast of the rupture in black polyester. Where the pure and natural salt has opened up, the black synthetic proliferates out of it’s core, as a tumor growing at the same speed as the mineral.

This work was the first sculpture that Badriah made after having an almost fatal accident. Without deliberately putting it there, it looks like the artist is reflecting on this duality in her use of contrasting colors and materials. It seems to be saying: “At the moment of birth our death is born as well’’. And quite rightly so. In fact, it is the only certainty that we have.
