A4.2c, BLACKENED BRONZE, 2009-2013
Seen from the side, this bass relief is only a few millimeters high, the rest of the work is done by the light. In the work A4 we can see Badriah sculpting light rather than matter. In that sense this artwork is as much conceptual as it is physical.
One of Badriah’s early pieces in bronze, created when she was still a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp, known for its focus on human anatomy. Badriah: ‘This period was about learning how to capture the volume of the human body; knowing what the backside of a human body looks like when you are facing the front. The challenge and interest lay in capturing this whilst using the absolute minimum in terms of volume.’
