A8, STATUARIO PURO MARBLE 2012
This extremely fine shell of marble balancing on two points no bigger than your fingertips, is as thin as 2 millimeters in cross-section in some places, making the marble almost transparent. The two lines that determine the shape are going in opposite directions; they do not touch, yet constitute the form together. It hints towards bending the fabric of space-time and seems to be talking about some kind of fatal attraction.
As the work is constantly in danger of breaking, it asks questions about the precarious nature of our human experience and the short-lived moments of beauty that it consists of. Badriah made this in Italy in 2012, when she just finished her Sculpture BA in Antwerp and was at a zero-gravity point in life, where she didn’t know what move to make next. Looking back on it now, this sculpture expresses that state of equilibrium about to be shattered; “scarily fragile”, and very much compressed. Indeed this piece seems bound to shatter. It is a reflection on the elusiveness of fragile states of harmony, as some relationships are, that were not meant to last.
